Dust collection systems or dust extraction systems are installed in industrial establishments for removal of airborne dust generated in the process of production. Application of such systems can be in a wide-range of industries like food, pharmaceuticals, engineering, mineral processing, chemicals, steel, fertilizer, sugar, paper, textiles, coal handling plant among others. A work environment with dust above permissible limits can pose several risks such as fire hazard, damage to electrical machines, deterioration in quality of work, loss of efficiency, and most importantly serious risk to health of workers. The various health and safety related guidelines and other regulatory provisions are also to be complied with. All this bring to the fore the necessity of dust extraction systems, which can effectively capture the particulate dust, convey it and finally filter it out before returning the clean air back to the work place. The basic components of the system are a suction hood, conveying duct, extraction fan, filters, dust collection bins/hoppers, dampers for flow control and isolation. The closure the suction hood is to the machine generating dust, the more will be the dust capture efficiency. A proper flow velocity is to be maintained in the ducts so that the captured dust does settle inside it causing choking. Ducts are of circular or rectangular cross section. Filters are usually of fabric cartridge type or bag type. Bag filters are periodically cleaned on-line with techniques like pulse jet cleaning which use short duration pulses of compressed air to dislodge the dust particles.
