Description/ Specification of Clamp Meter

Clamp meter or Tong tester, are available in hand held portable designs with direct digital display of the measured parameter. Tong testers can measure AC/DC current/ voltage/resistance/power/capacitance/frequency etc in live circuits without physical contact with the circuit. They have a soft ferrite ring split in two parts (called jaws) which are put together to form a continuous ring around the conductor under measurement. Around the ring, a coil is wound which acts as the secondary of a current transformer, the conductor being the primary one. Models are available which can measure very high range of current. Factors to look for while selecting a clamp meter are range, accuracy of measurement, resistance, jaw opening size, clarity of display among others.
