Description/ Specification of Cable Fault Locator
Cable fault locators are hand held electronic instruments used for determining location of faults or damages in underground cables. The faults may be of different types like phase to phase fault or phase to earth faults or an open circuit due to breaking of conductor. In phase to phase or phase to earth faults the insulation may be partly or completely damaged or is weak due to some contaminant, like moisture. Since underground cables are lifeline for the city power distribution systems, quick and accurate location of the same is vital for early restoration. Cable fault locators assist in this task. Earlier principle of cable fault locators was based on the Murray or Varley loop test which are basically variations of a Wheatstone bridge principle. These involved cumbersome procedure like null balancing. Now models based on time domain reflectometry(TDR) technology is available, which directly display the distance of fault location with high level of accuracy. TDR technology sends pulse signals along the cable and measure reflections. For cables with uniform impedance across the length and proper termination, there will be no reflections of the wave. For faulty cable, the reflections received are processed to identify the fault location. Various models of cable fault locators available to suit cable type like power cables, telecom cables, optical fiber cables etc. This page show the catalog of companies dealing in cable fault locator.
