Ghoom monastery, belonging to the Tibetan school of Gelug Buddhism, is a more than 150-year-old Buddhist Monastery that houses a 15ft high statue of lord Buddha. The happy valley tea estate located at a height of 6900 ft and within walking distance from the Darjeeling town, is one the oldest tea estates established in 1854, which offers a lush green view and an experience in the cultivation, collection of tea leaves and processing of tea to give the legendary Darjeeling tea that is famous all over the world for it’s unique aroma and flavour. The estate is also having it’s own tea processing factory. A must collection item here is a packet of Darjeeling tea available from the factory boutique for sale. The rock Garden , which is a multilevel picnic ground is located about 10 km from the Darjeeling town. It offers views of hill streams cascading over rocks along the slope. It also has sitting spaces and flower gardens around. Besides these places one can also take trips to nearby areas like Mirik , which is famous for the Mirik lake and the boating facilities. The road to Mirik from Darjeeling offers misty views of clouds meandering from one side of the road to the other. Mirik also has a large monastery that is worth visiting. From Darjeeling one can proceed to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, by hiring a cab. The road goes via the Town of Kalimpong and takes about 6-7 hours to reach Gangtok. On the way one will crisscross the Teesta river and can see it’s twists and turns below, while climbing up. Lachen,125km from Gangtok situated near the yuksom valley and offers an entry point for trek to Chopta valley, and Gurdongmar lake. One can also visit Pelling in West Sikkim, located at a distance of 131 km from Gangtok, which is known for it’s splendid view of the Mount Kanchenjunga. The 17th century Pemayangtse Monastery is located here which has a collection of Buddhist paintings, Sculptures, and a Gold-plated statue of Guru Padmasambhava. The Kanchenjunga National park is located only 40km from the town of Pelling, which offers a spectacular view of the blooming rhododendrons.
